Civil War Dog

FUN FACT: Dogs fought in the Civil War!

This dapper good boy is based on that bit of trivia—and a deep dive into actual Civil War letters. As a fan of Ken Burns’ The Civil War documentary, I wanted to add a touch of historical authenticity… and a whole lot of silliness.

The message at the bottom is stitched together from a real 1864 letter written by a Union soldier. It says:

My dearly beloved!
The General said I was a good boy! I feel highly flattered by the many compliments.

Your own affectionate
Civil War Dog

Here’s the original letter.

I cut, cropped, and stitched together real words to build the message above. It became a puzzle—figuring out what I could pull from history, and what a dog might write to his beloved.
